Leslie's Story

Time flies when you're having fun....so I must have had a lot of fun, because here I am a senior citizen...just like all of you. I'm happy to say that my life greatly improved after high school. Nothing against you guys, but coming to Grant in the 11th grade was not easy. No one was mean to me, but it was difficult to get into a clique, as it seemed they were all well-established long before I got there. Anyway, I went on to Valley College for a couple of years and graduated from Northridge in Jan '71 with a BA in Sociology. I ended up marrying my first boyfriend (usually a mistake, and mine was), and followed him to Berkeley......which was a lot of fun in the early 70's, as you might guess. I worked at the local outpatient psychiatric clinic as an account clerk, which was't fun, but it introduced me to the field of mental health, which I loved. I went back to school and got my Psychiatric Technician license in '75 and worked at Camarillo State Hospital (remember the song, Hotel California, by the Eag...Expand for more
les..."you can check out, but you can never leave" Well, I left after one year because I had been working on an all male unit for acutely mentally ill men. I witnessed a lot of patient abuse, and when I said I was going to report it, my fellow male employees said they wouldn't be there to protect me....so, I reported it and left, while I still could. I went back to school (USC) and got my MSW in'81 and my LCSW in '83. I worked for the County of Ventura from 6 '77 to 7 '12...35 years!! So now I have a nice pension and am enjoying the good life. I re-married in '83 and we have one daughter who is currently living in London trying to find herself....I wish she would find herself in California, but if I was 25 years old, I'd rather be in London than Santa Barbara, which is also a pretty nice place to live. I look forward to our 50th reunion as I did manage to make a few friends, some while I was there, but more after I left. Keep moving...I think that is the secret to youth, or at least a better old age.
