Dona's Story
September 2016
Years are flying by too quickly! Still living in Escondido CA, still growing 450 or so rose bushes for exhibiting and helping others to discover the ease and diversity of growing roses. My husband is VP of the national American Rose Society, serving two more years, then will be installed as National President. We enjoy this activity and the wonderful friends we have made around the country. I will also serve as President of our home society, starting in January 2017, the San Diego Rose Society. I also enjoy handling our website and photographing trophy winning rose entries at local, regional and national shows. Five of my six kids are married and we're up to 14 grandchildren so far. The two youngest couples haven't even started yet, so looking forward to more babies. I love volunteering weekly at the San Diego Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the LaJolla area. And, Bob still maintains a very active law practice from our home. He is an expert in taxation, tax litigation, international trust and estate structuring for both individuals, corporations and more. A busy guy! I would love to hear more about other classmates!!
January 2009 Update
Got settled in Escondido last summer and love it here. It was so disappointing to have such a small turnout at the reunion last fall! Even so, it was fun to visit with those who attended. Many who had attended the other reunions skipped this one. Wonder why. Maybe we should try a more casual, less expensive event for the "true" 40th year, 2009. Don't know if anyone reads these postings or not, but if so, write back your thought!
June 2008 Update
We are moving this month to Escondido, CA, a big change for me after 25 years in Arizona. I am looking...Expand for more
forward to our 40th reunion and hope lots of people attend!
Now only my last son is in high school, with the next two girls attending BYU, a freshman and a senior. My older son begins his surgical residency in Toledo, Ohio. It will be fun to live closer to my three grandchildren in San Clemente.
Life
I have lived in Gilbert, Arizona since 1982 and have six children, ages 16 to 34, with seven grandchildren so far. Two older daughters live in San Clemente and Ohio. My older son graduates this year from medical school. Third daughter is a junior at BYU, fourth will graduate from high school in Mesa, AZ, then attend BYU as well. My "baby" boy is a sophomore in high school.
I worked as a mortgage broker from 1988 to 2006. Prior to that, I worked 15 years in the garment industry as a sales rep for various companies, including Ocean Pacific Sunwear. In 1970, I joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (the "Mormons") and have been actively involved ever since. I have always loved gardening and in 1996 became involved in the American Rose Society, through our local rose society. Both my husband and I have been involved in speaking and writing about rose horticulture, exhibiting roses, as well as holding local and national leadership positions. We presently grow over 400 roses of all types. I also started our local society website in 1997. This led to increased interest in digital photography and that has become my other main hobby. My husband, Robert B. Martin Jr, is a practicing tax and trust attorney, with offices in Pasadena and Glendale, CA, for over 25 years. Last year, he joined a firm in San Diego and we plan to move there when our home in Arizona sells.
I look forward to attending our reunion August 2008!
