Robin's Story

Hi, well let's start at the beginning I was born in Memphis, TN and I was named for my paternal grandmother Robbie Ola Tucker Wilson Smith and two months after I was born my family moved. My older brother was also born in Memphis, TN and he moved many more times than I ever did. In fact, he went to over twenty different schools by the time he graduated from high school. My mom used to be a nurse and grew up in Massachusetts and my dad is a professor and grew up in Tennessee. My father was in the Navy for twenty years and by the time I was born he was working with the military as a civilian. I started school in Newport, RI and we first moved to Germany in 1982. We lived in Wiesbaden and I loved it!! I was in the second grade and my brother was in high school. My favorite teacher was in the second grade, Ms. Halecki and I wish I could find her, but I can not. My family and I made great friends in Weisbaden and we are still in touch with them today. My family never lived on any post, but in a German homes on the economy. I learned just as much from the trips that we made to England, Ireland, Scotland, Italy, East Germany, Belgium, France, Bavaria and the Netherlands as I did in my text books. I look back and realize how lucky I was to be a military brat. My father got orders to move to Baltimore, MD in 1984 and we were there until 1986. My father then got transferred to Vilseck. My brother graduated from high school and was in college so he did not move with us. I was excited and happy to be returning to Germany even to this day I always felt and feel more comfortable in Europe than in the States..I don't know why. I never thought that I would have as much fun as I did in Vilseck and Graf..especially since Wiesbaden was bigger, but I did. I have so many wonderful memories that I treasure that I don't even know where to start. But the best memories are of spending time with my friends on trips and in class/lunch. If I could go back in time there are only a few things I would change..letting stupid teenage problems and issues bother me and disrupt my friendships. But, I guess you learn and move on. I am so lucky to have had all the friendships I did in Vilseck and the only other time I had such great times was in law school. I was so devastated when my father got orders to Augusta, GA in early 1990 that I don't remember the end of my ninth grade year of high school. It was a huge culture shock moving to GA after living in Germany and I have never gotten used to it. I graduated high school in 1993 and received the HOPE scholarship so I stayed in GA for college and graduated from Augusta State University with a BS in biology in 1998. I then decided to get my teacher's certificate..mainly because teaching runs in my family ( my brother is a Social Studies/Geography teacher in Md and married with two kids), but I tried it and the running stopped with me. :) So, I went back to my first love, biology and decided to try law school with an emphasis in Environmental law. I applied and got into Roger Williams School of Law and made some great life long friends and I also learned to keep my mouth shut sometimes...especially when a professor embarrasses you in front of 90 other classmates. You learn quickly to answer the question asked and hope that you answered correctly. You also learn in law school to drink like a fish and cuss like a sailor i...Expand for more
n order to deal with the stress. And have some fun in the process. Without my friends and family (especially my mother's side in New England) I would not have graduated. And on May 15, 2004 I did graduate with a JD in law and it was one of the best days of my life. After I graduated, my parents needed surgeries and so i moved back to Martinez, GA to be with them. They are fine now so I am getting my life back on track. I was a substitute teacher for awhile, but I now have a new and great job. I am the Chief Operating Officer at a health center here in Augusta, GA and I just passed the pre-bar exam with flying colors. I can now take any bar exam in the country and I am signed up for the Massachusetts bar exam. I spend my days working and then studying so I don't have much time for anything else. But, all the sacrificies will be worth it in the end. I still enjoy alot of things that I did when I was younger. My movie tastes and music tastes have not changed much. Considering that my first word was Batman (thanks to my brother's influence) and my name is Robin..yes I know..my favorite movie then still is the 1989 version of Batman with Batman Begins right behind it. I am of course looking forward to the Dark Knight and my latest movies that I enjoyed are The Waitress, The Departed and Fever Pitch. Any movie with either Jack Nicholson, Sean Connery, Morgan Freeman or Katharine Hepburn is usually a winner for me. I love and live for the Red Sox and Patriots and as far as music..I am an 80's girl, but there are some 90's and today's music that I like ( NIN and some grunge). I do still greatly enjoy Madonna ( who is getting into the Hall of Fame!!!) U2 and Def Leppard. But, I also like oldies from the 50's and 60's. I love Sam Cooke, Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash. Right now, I am listening to the Psychadelic Furs and Rihanna. I love going to museums and especially art museums and anything that has to do with biology and history. I love the Harry Potter book series and I am very sad that they are finished..I hope that JK Rowling will change her mind one day. I also enjoy the Alex Cross series and I really love mythology and Shakespeare. And I do love to shop ( my signficant other calls me "material girl"). And yes I know I am a nerd.. I love Jeopardy. My favorite shows are Lost and Real Time with Bill Maher. I do have a boyfriend although he is not happy right now because he does not get to see me much because of work and studying. I have a dog (Jack, named for Jack Nicholson) and a cat (Bruce, yes for Bruce Wayne..I found Bruce right after Batman Begins came out). Well, I will admit to one wild thing I did in school, my class was on a trip to East Germany and we were told not to raise our hands because the Soviet police could take a photo of our raised hand and erase four fingers in the photo leaving the offensive finger raised and try to cause an incident. So, just to be spiteful I decided that they did not need to erase any fingers with my possible photo and I gave them a one-finger wave as we went through Checkpoint Charlie..that is my dad's side coming out of me(as my mom has mentioned quite frequently)..google my great great.. grandfather Col. Fielding Hurst to understand. I hope that my friends remember me as fondly as I remember them. I also hope that this New Year finds everyone happy and healthy. Take Care. Always, Robin
