Eileen Reilly's Story
Although while at McDevitt I often felt like a total misfit, my post McD life has been filled with many rich rewards. After serving honorably in the USMC and marrying, once my 3 kids were ain school I began my a career in social work and early childhood education. Now formally retired, I enjoy the opportunity to spend time painting, writing poetry and short stories, cooking and persuing needle arts. Most of all though, I am very blessed to have time to spend with our family. Jim, my husband of 3 plus decades and I are "Mom & Dad" to five great kids.
My three homemade childern were from my previous marriage to Glen Nephin. Son Dan Nephin (44) is a reporter with the Lancaster New Era/Intell and is die hard marathoner and inveterate catch & release fly fisherman who ties his own flies and idolizes trout. Dan & his wife Kathleen are busy restoring thier 1858 Lancaster home.
Shannon, our middle child is mentally disabled from birth and has special needs, and lives at home with us, enjoying her world of dolls, coloring, Tinkerbell and Tweety. After surviving a massive bout with Neuroleptic Maliginant Syndrome in 2006, and a series of flutter strokes around Christmas 2012, Shannon is left with the mentality of about a 3 year old, despite turning 44 June 10, 2013. But, she is happy and very much loved and cared for by all who know her.
Meghan, at 42 is our "baby"; she lives in the Poconos where she's an Earth Mother extraordinare. She's a great Mom to her two girls: talented Temple University bound dancer/writer Ivy Elizabeth (18) and bubbly Lily Marie (12) who enjoys taking care of her family's chicken flock, swimming in the lake, reading and having Nancy Drew style adventures during which she charms all she meets. Meghan runs her own business: Girlie Green Cleaning, an enviornmentally aware "green" home cleaning service, while hubby Dennis is a self employed builder/contractor.
Along with my birth children, my husband Jim and I (married 36 years June 2013) have raised several foster children. Our Debbie (43), remains our "daughter" to this day. Debbie and her 5 year old Oliva Joy, a wiggly bundle of laughter knows she can count on Pop Pop or Grandma to have a lap to share whenever she needs a story time. Despite having severe epilepsy, our Deb is in college and working on the final leg of a degree in the Human Resources field.
Our family also hosted exchange students in year long programs too, and Nele, who came from Germany as an AFS exchanger for the 86-87 school year quickly became a true part of our family. Nele teaches at the German school in DC, lives in MD and has given us 3 more grandkids; footballer Justus (16), fancy miss, Pia (14) & Anna, who at 8 keeps them all -- including her daddy, Matthias -- in line. .
We are blessed that our kids life's partners are great people too; Dan's wife, Kathleen, is a dance and movement therapist and is extremely talented artistically as well. Meghan's spouse D...Expand for more
ennis, a Poconos contractor, and Nele's husband Matthias, a professor at DC's Catholic University, have each added much richness to our family "stew".
Although my mom, Elizabeth (Betty Claus) Reilly, passed away in July of 2011, she is very much with us in spirit and we bless our good fortune to have had her through her 89th year. Mom was a big part of our daily lives and although life must and does go on without her, we think of her every day and are blessed to have so many beautiful memories. Mom's wit and wisdom was lovingly shared with all who were part of our lives.
Another blessing is the fact that our mentally disabled daughter, Shannon, is still able to be at home with us. Shannon continues to recover from the effects of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome which occured when the neurologist prescribed a new medicine for her in 2006. The stroke-like effects of the NMS caused devastating heart, kidney & brain damage, and contributed to the stokes she suffered last winter. But, Shannon's our miracle girl -- with help from us and our team of wonderful nurses, she is dressed, eats & maintains hygiene, so we've much to be thankful for.
Growing up, I always thought I'd be a writer some day; although my family thought it was a great idea, I never got to write as I had wanted. But given time, things change, so now, in addition to my poetry writing (some of which has been published) and short stories, I've begun my book...so stay tuned!!
As a late blooming but award winning amatuer watercolorist, last year I was pleased to start a successful art co-op: "Old Fogey Art Co-Op" , with my photographer husband Jim. I recently sold out of a limited edition run of some of my paintings, and was especially honored to be chosen to paint the 2012 award painting for the Lancaster Women's Alliance's Jean Royer Kohr award. In my spare time, when I am not caring for Shannon or giving art lessons, I run Dragonfly Tarot from my home; you may be surprised to know that I have read Tarot ever since I learned from my Irish grandmother as a very young child.
As for "wild life", we share our home with our tuxedo cat Meadow, 14 years old, while outdoors a pond full of goldfish - all named Sam by the grandkids - complete the cadre of creatures who share our 1897 Lancaster Co. abode and its rather weedy "English" gardens.
As Jim, Shannon, and I have each experienced serious and life threatening health issues -- including Jim & I having bouts of cancer, over the past decade, we know full well that each day spent in one another's company is a gift. We find true joy among our family & friends; without a doubt -- they're our greatest treasures. Catch me on facebook if you are interested in knowing more. And if you're ever in Lancaster, come see me and I'll tell your fortune! And if anyone knows the whereabouts of my old friends Jeannette Holly or Marilee Eary, I'm looking for them. contact me at Best wishes to all and sundry, Eileen
