Betsy's Story
Life
I married Keith (class of '90) in 1993. We have three kids - Emily, Molly, and Connor - our newest addition born 10/2000. I walked out of Bank of NH in Farmington after 14 years - I'm a stay-at-home Mom now. Our house is on Lovell Lake in Sanbornville.
Workplace
Farmington National Bank was a great company to work for - local, close-knit employees & owners. The move to Bank of NH was bad because sales and profit (to increase the bank's marketability) replaced the primary focus of customer service. A 14 year employee with extensive knowledge of products, services & the customers themselves, I was grossly unappreciated by the Farmington managers.
I had recently been licensed to sell fixed annuities & life insurance but was not given adequate time to complete my work load. I pitched in on the teller line often and without complaining. I covered other branches. The week I left I had come in early 1/2 hour and stayed late 1/2 hour (not paid) and had completed a big complicated sale. My office was given to the mortgage officer, the computers had been upgraded, and I couldn't even find the files I needed. I was sick (had a fever over 101) and still went to work on Saturday morning. I shouldn't have but I was feeling a bit better after I showered. I was late about 10 minutes -...Expand for more
the branch wasn't even open. I let the complaints roll off until I was threatened with probation. I finally said "Did you notice I came in early & left late yesterday?" The reply "Yeah, that's because you HAD to." I had to? I don't think so.... Fever to blame for next action (not my nature at all!) - I tore a page from her calendar, wrote "I quit", cleaned out my office & left.
To my surprise I never heard from anyone at the bank. Apparently my supervisor's story was all they wanted. Later a town employee heard from a municipal officer that I no longer worked at the bank due to a "tardiness issue." Absolutely untrue but according to the labor dept. the only way to fight that is a libel/slander case with a private attorney and then what do I get except a big bill? There's more (like the time I had a day off & the managers cleaned out my desk & threw away a lot of my stuff - notes I needed, pictures of my kids even!)
I am very happy as a stay-at-home Mom. I enjoy volunteering at the school, chaperoning field trips, and spending more time with my children. I have more friends than I've ever had before and so much less stress. I don't even wear a watch. Money's tighter but daycare was so expensive ($80 per day for 3 in the summer!) and the kids are young for such a short time.
