Susan's Story
Life
I graduated from Penn State in 1977, got married, and had 3 children - 2 boys & a girl. I divorced in 1993.
College
All I can say about my days at Happy Valley, is that they were truly the best days of my life. Even though I never knew what I wanted to be when I grew up (that's why it took me 8 years to finish), and even though I studied hard in college, I had SO much fun at Penn State's main campus. rm in Germany for a month. No one on that farm spoke any English. I learned more German there, that in all my years of study.
Workplace
Until recently, I was teaching math in an urban middle school. The students were predominantly minorities from lower socio economic levels. For the most part, the kids themselves were really nice, good kids, but there is just so much wrong with the system, I really do not feel that they are getting an equal opportunity at education. I honestly believe that there is some conspiracy to keep the lower classes where they are, maybe to ensure that McDonald's will have enough burger flippers. I don't know, but I did find it very frustrating. These kids have the same range of talents & abilities as anybody else, but what goes on in these schools would NEVER happen in the better-off suburban districts.
