Clifford's Story
College
Attended George Mason University in Fairfax, VA, on the GI Bill after completing 4 years in the Navy. Earned a Bachelor's in Business Administration in 1973.
Workplace
Started my career with the U.S. General Accounting Office in Washington, DC, in August 1973--after completing college at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. Currently a Senior Analyst in the Natural Resources and Environment Team, working on food and agriculture issues. During my career, have worked on a number of varied topics including, oil spill response, naval ship and facility acquisition, prevention of foot-and-mouth disease, and Superfund. Most memorable was agricultural terrorism, which was very interesting (but a little frightening). Traveled with GAO to a number of states as well as Canada and Mexico.
Military
Entered Navy in October 1965; Boot Camp at Great Lakes, finishing just before Christmas (anyone else remember tying wet laundry to metal clotheslines with metal-tipped string in sub-freezing w...Expand for more
eather? A real character-builder!) Then on the Robert L. Wilson, DD-847 out of Norfolk for 6 months waiting for an opening in Yeoman School at Bainbridge, MD. Love those storms in the North Atlantic; also got liberty in Bermuda, U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and beautiful Guantanamo Bay (my shipmates and I agreed it was a true "pit" and expressed sympathy for the poor sailors stationed there). After completing work at Bainbridge, became a Communications Technician and stationed in--big surprise--Naval Security Group, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba from August 1966-August 1967 (a.k.a. "The Rock"). Primary off-duty activities pretty much limited to drinking, snorkeling/scuba, drinking, card-playing, drinking, and horseback riding. I did get to spend some R&R in Haiti, which--despite the horrendous poverty--was a beautiful country. Next, to Naval Security Group, at U.S. Naval Security Station in Washington, DC. "Retired" as a Second Class Petty Officer in October 1969 and started college in 1970.
