John Goggin:

CLASS OF 1967
Marlborough, MA

John's Story

To say I disliked school would be an understatement - and it showed in my grades. My folks wanted me to go on to college but I wouldn't have any part in that. After June 10, 1967 I worked in several different jobs and finally enlisted in the Navy in March of 1968. I had no idea what I was really getting myself into but I wanted to get away. As it ended up - I spent nearly 21 years in the Navy and never did get to serve on a ship at sea. I married a classmate, Bonnie Reilly, June 12, 1969 in Scotland and we were fortunate enough to have traveled together to all of my duty stations. I was stationed in Edzell Scotland, Finegayen and Agana Guam, Northwest VA, Sidi Yahia, Morocco, Sabana Seca Puerto Rico, San Angelo TX, Galeta Island Panama (former Canal Zone), London England and Washington DC. After "retiring" from the Navy, we headed south to Florida - no snow for us! We went to the Tampa/St. Pete area and stayed there from 88 to 97 when we returned to MA. My folks were snowbirds, which is why we went south in the first place and finally came home to family. While in FL, I went to work for the U.S. Postal Service and ended up with them for 21 years retiring on Dec 31, 2010. rtners at the Marlboro Fish and Game Club. Giving an oral book report for Mr. Cosgrove I hadn't read a book and decided to give a quick version of The Silver Chalice by Costain that I read in 8th grade. When no one asked questions, good ole Mr. Cosgrove opened his briefcase and pulled out the book and started thumbing through it and asking questions. The only one I didn't know the answer to was something near the end and I was lucky enough to get by with telling him if I told that answer no one would want to read the book - and got away with it. Ms. O'Halloran asking if I was going to take Typing II because if I was she was going to fail me. As it turned out, my time in the Navy was in communications centers where I could type over 100 words per minute. I like to read, take pictures and work with wood. My best friend would tell you I'm an instigator, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as trouble. No sports trophies on the mantle but I have a room full of Navy memorabilia. In 10 years, I hope to be living comfortably. I'm going to get there by winning the lottery!. My first real job was at Marlboro Wire Goods, where I got paid $1.25 to bend wire on hand presses. What I remember most about it is I was so scrawney that I had to put my feet on the bench behind me and use all my 95 lbs to move the handles..
