Joanne Atkinson:

CLASS OF 1967

Joanne's Story

Loved every minute of high school, but then I had to grow up. Got married, had 3 amazing sons. Worked 35 years in a commercial heating company which I owned with my ex husband. Along the way I took many courses and was at various times a potter, a painter, a carpenter, gardener, you name it. Now I am a grandmother of 7, and still find the humor in this crazy existence we call life. I've been in touch with many old school friends and am delighted to know that we are much the same deep down as we were back in '67. Life goes on and I am now single and free to make my own decisions and do whatever I want to do, and as soon as I figure out what that is, I'm going to do it. I always wanted to be a artist when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were wrong. My favorite way to relax is to just take the damn anti-anxiety and fall asleep. The wildest thing I ever did in high school was to drink a bottle of Jack Daniels with my friend Sue in the school parking lot the night of the senior reception. e humor, friends, and complete control to be able to deal with the day-to-day. If I could see one teacher again it would be Mr. Hannigan, just to tell him that the letters that I handed in for being absent so many times were never from my mother. I wrote them all. To be truly happy I'd be somewhere in either Kennebunkport, Me or Conway, NH running or better yet, owning a B&B, with a happy, confident, compassionate man. My current age is 61. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be dead. I was so completely close.. My first crush was Nicky Palmer in 6th grade. He was a great boyfriend until a new girl came to school and he dumped me like a hot potato. Never got over it. My best friend would tell you I'm nuts, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as completely nuts. In 10 years, I hope to be alive. I'm going to get there by breathing every day. IMy first job was at Cole's , where I got paid .65/hr to wait tables. What I remember most about it is my mother kept all my money. I hope my old friends remember me as caring, funny and a true friend.
