James's Story

Life I was an undistinguished student at CD high. Although I loved playing baseball for the varsity team as a pitcher. I later pitched Legion ball and played at Temple on the MAC Championship teams in 68 and 69' I also played for the semi pro Germantown team the Philadelphia Black Bombers-I was i think the only white player-later played with North Phila. Cardinals of the Pen-Del League. The Phillies actually gave me a tryout when i was 15 a sophmore at Dougherty! After graduation from CD High in 63 I joined the US Merchant Marines sailing on freighters and oil tankers and seeing the world. I attended St. Joe's and later Temple graduating in 1969 with a teaching degree. I married my high school sweetheart and first love, Kathleen O Brien also of St Vincent's in Germantown (Little Flower 64') It didn't work out but I love her still. I volunteered for duty in Vietnam with the US Navy and came home in 1971.I served in combat and my crew saved many pilots lives. I went to Grad school in Ireland at the National University of Ireland in Galway where I did research for a Masters Degree on Irish Gypsy education. reland. I was in another conflict then along with my wife, Valerie, a Librarian, and a Galway Irishwoman. I worked later as a researcher in Belfast at Queen's University and as a prison teacher and accepted an assistant professorship training teachers at University College Dublin in 1980. In 1982 our son, Ross was born. Ross is now playing football (a kicker and punter) at University of North Carolina's Fayetteville State campus. He was ranked 5th in USA as a kicker in 2003 and has been named to the CIAA Conference First Team in 2003 and 2004 also making the "Daktronics All South Team " in 2003 and 2004. He will have a NFL Combine tryout next month. I left Ireland in 1991 to take up the King Distinguished Professorship and Chair of Education at East Carolina University. I returned to Ireland as the first Dean of Education in the Irish nation in 1992 at Limerick University but realizing administration was not for me I returned to the East Carolina University faculty as Professor in 1994 where I work still. I teach Cultural Foundations of Education; American Education ; Cultural Diversity and Curriculum Theory/Action Research courses. I'd love to hear from any old classmates .
