Gary's Story
Life
My life is like a highway. It was once new, then heavily traveled. Some get on and right off, others travel along with me for awhile. Some leave scars that last forever, others leave fond memories of weekend trips and fun. Some spend time to get to know me others just have a quick visit and never return. It is always there waiting for someone to get on and take a ride to somewhere, quick or long, some forever - thank GOD.
School
The hardest of times - too many life challenges, but all helped to shape who and why I am this person today. Great friends, worst friends. Learning to have relationships. Girls were my best of friends. Left many girls with bad memories that most will never forgive. Glad to have survived, sometimes can't believe that I turned it around so much to what I have today. The road could have taken a darker turn. Thankful for all that touched my life in one way or another. Wouldn't change a thing, not ready for the consequences of a new path.
College
Great times, hard work - 18 credit hours, 38 hours of work. Started late, 24 Y.O. Missed the best of college life with new marriage. Teachers and subjects were awesome. I got it! NROTC was a chance I will never forget, set the stage for the rest of my life. Sunny San Diego was completely fantastic. Relearning High School during BOOST was ...Expand for more
payback for the party years. Once on track school was cool. Challenged who I was and what I wanted out of life.
Military
Belonging to something higher than myself. Source of great opportunities. Put me on track to making something of my life. Got me straight, educated me, took me around the world, challenged me, kept me moving forward. Discovered the greatness of many nations and saw the birth of democracy first hand in Rieka Croatia. Friends and co-workers have been the absolute best. Provided me friends around the world.
Retired/Return to Civilian Life:
Returned from Iraq and after 26 years retired. I am now again a civilian and must say, ready to grow up alittle and stand alone and unaffraid. It took many years but I finally have reached a great place in life. Family, friends, career, health, I honestly have achieved a huge amount of joy and success and can say I am proud of where I landed.
But this is just part III of the journey: Part I Birth through HS (The Dark Ages), Part II (Military and My Awakening), Part III (Living & Loving Life) to its fullest and cherishing everything we have in this great country. Thankful that I had so many chances to get it right. Thankful for forgiveness for all of my sins and mistakes and thankful for my wonderful partner, love, and best friend and two incredible kids.
