Dennis's Story
After my days at Warren G Harding I went off to school at Miami University in Beautiful Oxford, Ohio. After college I moved to Cincinnati and got a job in a restaurant. Then I lucked out and had dinner with a college friend and his Uncle got me an interview with Frisch's. I started there as a Manager. Spent a couple of years there and then got a job as the Chef / Food Producyion Manager at Jack Niclaus Sportscenter. There I catered events for the Sportscenter including the LPGA Championship. Men's Senior Championship and the ATP. Besides running the clubhouse I built a great experience base. I then went to work for a new upstart company called Marco Polo. Unfortuantely they did not suceed. Great product though. Marinated Chickens cooked over grills. Mmmmmmm. The owner got me a Manager job in downtown Cincinnati and I spent a couple of years there. I then got into the hotel business with the Terrace Hilton and then the Hyatt. Then I talked myself into a GREAT position with the Regal hotel I built a great reputation there and things were going well when the Argosy Casino came calling. Yep, I went for the money. Did not like the casino business. Went back to the hotel business. Opened a Embassey Suites as the Food and Beverage Director / Hotel Night Manager.
Then my life changed. My Mom fell and broke her knee cap. The first place we put her in for rehab was terrible. Food and services both. Next was just slighly better. They did not make diabetic desserts for my Mom. Anyone who kmows me knows my Mom was a...Expand for more
baker! I was still getting care packages in college. LOL. Well I quit my job as the Food and Beverage Director in a hotel and waited tables at Dave and Busters during the day and cooked at Bahama Breeze at night. I was leaving my time open for interviewing. Not sure I knew what I was looking for but I knew I could do better than those places my Mom were at. Lucky for me Morrison Healthcare was coming to town and looking for someone to upscale a retirement community. 13 years later I am still an Employee of theirs. I went back to school at Cincinnati State and got a CDM. I have lived in 7 states and travelled a lot for them. Nice way to see the country for free. LOL
Lesson learned? It is not about the money or prestige but about a purpose for getting up each day. I started out delivering pizzas in college and have been a Restaurant manager for independent and chain restaurants, been a restaurant manager for a hotel and managed room service, managed a 3 Star restaurant in a revolving restaurant that I parlayed into the Director of Rstaruants and Bars for the 890 room hotel (managing 2 restaurants, managed 2 bars, booked live music and sold catered events), opened a riverboat casino as the opening Food and Beverage Manager. Lots of great positons that got me into soldout events, restaurants, on the radion and in magazines and newspapers. But it took my Mom slipping off the curb to see my true calling in the food and beverage business.
I am now in Athens, Ohio. Been trying to move back to Ohio for a while.
