Scottie Upshall was sitting in a barber’s chair in Old City when his cell phone began ringing with calls from reporters in Toronto telling him he had been traded to the Phoenix Coyotes for tough guy Dan Carcillo.
Upshall was stunned.
“I had to kind of say, ‘sorry guys, I will have to call you back,’ ” Upshall said.
All season long, Upshall had heard his name rumored in the trade mill. He thought he would survive.
“I sat around this morning and thought I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else after today and hopefully that would continue,” said the 25-year-old winger.
It didn’t. He admitted great disappointment to leave a Stanley Cup contender for a team in trouble in the Arizona desert.
“It’s tough to take,” Upshall said. “The emotions are not the best emotions at first. I realize it is part of the game and you move on to a new team and new city.”
Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said he also got emotional when he reached Upshall to tell him.
“The trade deadline is a difficult time for players to go through,” Holmgren said. “When you call a guy and inform him he’s been moved, especially, a guy who wants to be here, I know Scottie wanted to be here. He’s sad. I get emotional when I talk to players in that situation.".
