Adrienne's Story

As of 2009, I mostly quit Classmates and moved to Facebook, so please look for me on FB; I'd be happy to hear from you. . . . Yes we can!!! We elected Barack Obama, and that gives me hope that other positive changes can finally happen in this country. But I am dismayed to have seen the passage of Prop 8 in California. It saddens me that people still can't make the distinction between civil marriage and religion-sanctioned marriage. Whatever happened to the promise of equality under the law, and separation of church and state? Why isn't the Constitution upheld to protect the rights of ALL Americans? And what is it that people don't understand about the crushing need for health care reform / health insurance reform?! If you've ever had to go without health insurance, as I have at many times in my life, you'll understand how scary that can be. What if your child were ill, and you couldn't get him or her the proper care because you couldn't afford insurance? Contrary to Sarah Palin's convoluted rants, the problem does not involve "death panels" for the future; but leaving millions of Americans without access to health care, as we currently seem hellbent on doing, IS a sentence of suffering and death. Wake up, people, and do the right thing. . . . . . Right now I am back in graduate school, this time in the Media Arts & Computer Science program at New Mexico Highlands University, where I serve as a teaching assistant for typography and design classes. I am studying multimedia production and planning, and my interests include photography, print and Web design, 3-D modeling, GIS, and video/audio editing; potential applications include educational media, exhibit design, natural-and-cultural resources interpretation and tourism...Expand for more
. I am a member of the National Association for Interpretation and the Association of American Geographers. I am producing a series of museum-tour podcasts for a small museum in Las Vegas, New Mexico (very different from the flashy Vegas in Nevada!). Check out lasvegasmuseum dot org, then click on the "Education" link, if you are interested. We are working with a tiny budget and local/amateur talent, but our visitors have responded very favorably to the tours. From 2004-2007 I worked for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, helping to develop a park manager training program and pitching in on other projects as needed. I continue to do freelance editorial work on textbooks for McGraw-Hill Higher Education, and I am trying to pick up additional work doing graphic design, interpretive planning, and photography for organizations involved with cultural awareness and environmental education. "Home" for most of the past 25 years has been Austin, TX, but I have wanted to move to northern New Mexico for many years, and this past winter that dream finally came true. My partner, Marsha Rippetoe, worked for the American Holstein (dairy cattle) Assn. and Northeast Cooperatives (natural foods distributor) before taking a job with the Texas Vaccines for Children Program; she is now a health educator with the New Mexico Department of Health in Santa Fe. Marsha grew up in the small town of Lipan, Texas, and has a bachelor's and master's in Biology Education from Tarleton State University. She had breast cancer surgery in 2001, and she has taught me a great deal about stubborn, gutsy perseverance. We are currently renting a small but cozy house on the edge of the national forest in Pecos, and hope to settle permanently in the area.
